Are Stress and Anxiety Running Your Life?

Do you live with a constant feeling of worry or dread? Maybe you find yourself constantly thinking about the future and anticipating the worst-case-scenarios that your mind insists will happen. Or, perhaps, you’re living in fight-or-flight mode, battling uncomfortable physical sensations like a racing heart and sweaty palms while you try to accomplish your daily tasks.

It may be that a major life event like a trauma, physical illness, or significant loss has happened, and ever since then, you’ve found yourself feeling anxious and uneasy. Or it may be that you deal with a more chronic form of anxiety. You can’t point to any specific reason why you’re anxious, yet you recognize that your mind and body are never fully relaxed.

Are you going through a major life transition, like changing jobs, starting or ending a relationship, or becoming a parent for the first time? All of these can be sources of anxiety. A big change, or the start of something new, can trigger uncomfortable sensations in the mind and body. What’s new, unanticipated, or unexpected can be a challenge, and it’s natural to feel unbalanced and uncertain during these times of transition.

Do you find that it’s difficult to be present in the moment? People who deal with stress and anxiety—which is to say, just about everyone—can have a hard time being in the here-and-now.

The mind wants to wander into the future and prepare for potential obstacles or catastrophes that might lie ahead. And the body feels restless, unable to slow down and relax. The demands of modern life make it harder than ever to find peace and stillness in the present moment. And if you’re prone to anxiety, it’s even harder.

Stress and anxiety are both mental and physical experiences. They come with uncomfortable sensations and a near-constant feeling of being overwhelmed.

If You Think You Might Be Suffering From Anxiety, You’re Not Alone!

We all experience some form of anxiety at some point in our lives. Whether it’s working up the nerve to speak in front of a large group of people or getting stuck in a traffic jam on the way to an important meeting, many daily occurrences can be triggers for anxiety. But sometimes, the feelings of stress and anxiety reach larger proportions and start to get in the way of functioning.

You might be surprised to learn that anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge among adults in the U.S. In fact, over 19% of adults meet criteria for an anxiety disorder. That’s nearly a quarter of the U.S. adult population! Formal anxiety disorders are divided into multiple categories, such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Panic Disorder.

However, even those people who don’t necessarily meet criteria for a specific anxiety disorder have likely experienced some of the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety, which include increased heart rate, racing thoughts, gastrointestinal issues, shortness of breath, irritability tingling in the hands and feet, dizziness, insomnia, poor concentration, feelings of dread, and fatigue.

Research suggests that genetics and environmental factors are the primary contributors to anxiety. These environmental factors can include major life events or chronic lifestyle issues like a demanding job, poor social support, or exposure to abuse or violence.

But even though anxiety and stress can be common—and, if left untreated, debilitating—it’s possible to find freedom from the symptoms of anxiety. With the right support, anxiety can be managed in a way that allows you to be more present in your life and go from just surviving to fully thriving. In fact, research shows that there’s a way to learn how to utilize stress and anxiety as a positive source of motivation, without letting it take over your life or cause symptoms of distress. Therapy is one powerful way to gain this ability.

How Anxiety and Stress Therapy Help You or Someone You Love

Psychotherapy that involves a skill-building component has been shown to be an effective intervention for treating anxiety and stress. While many therapy approaches can be useful for treating anxiety and stress, the expert therapists at Evergreen Therapy design research-supported approaches that are tailored to work specifically for you.

Anxiety and stress therapy can help you understand your unique triggers and symptoms of anxiety, teach you ways to calm down and regulate your mind/body when you’re anxious, give you useful tools to ground yourself in the present moment, and guide you to discover ways to thrive in the face of anxiety and stress.

I use a variety of approaches and techniques to treat anxiety and stress:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This evidence-based therapy approach is designed to help you identify patterns of thinking that trigger and amplify anxiety. The CBT therapy process involves identifying these patterns and working to shift them so that vicious cycles of thinking and reacting get interrupted and redirected.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): This is a form of therapy that combines the basics of CBT (see above) with the Eastern principles of mindfulness. The MBCT therapy process involves learning a variety of meditative and contemplative techniques that help you develop a new and improved relationship with your mind.

Psychoeducation and Skill-Building: Learning about the nature of anxiety can be highly effective in changing your relationship to it. This therapeutic intervention involves teaching you the signs and symptoms of anxiety, as well as providing you with useful tips for identifying your personal triggers so you can start to cope with anxiety before it takes over. The skill-building aspect of therapy involves teaching you a wide variety of tools and techniques you can incorporate in your daily life (and keep with you forever!) to manage anxiety and stress more effectively.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): This form of therapy, which is based in part on the Buddhist tradition, is aimed at helping you regulate your emotions, connect with the present moment, tolerate distress, set helpful boundaries in your relationships, and ask for what you need. The goal of DBT is to give you a broader and more balanced perspective and a positively transformed relationship with yourself, your life, and the people around you.
